Helpful Tips
Download the Metroinfo app to track real-time bus arrivals and buy mobile tickets for Christchurch's bus network.
Purchase a Metrocard at the airport or any convenience store to save 25-30% on bus fares across the city.
The Purple Line bus connects the airport to city center in 30-40 minutes, departing from the main terminal bus stop.
Use the Orbiter bus route to quickly circle between major shopping areas like Riccarton Mall and The Palms without transfers.
Common Scams to Avoid
Unlicensed drivers soliciting rides inside the terminal: Some individuals approach arriving passengers near baggage claim offering cheaper rides than official taxis. Only use the official taxi rank outside the terminal where drivers must display proper identification and use meters.
Taxi meter manipulation on airport runs: Some drivers take unnecessarily long routes from Christchurch Airport to city hotels, targeting first-time visitors unfamiliar with the short 10-15 minute journey. Track your route on your phone's map app and politely question any significant deviations from the most direct path.
Excessive luggage fees with shuttle services: Certain private shuttle operators add surprise charges for each piece of luggage beyond a small carry-on, which isn't disclosed upfront. Confirm the total price including all luggage before boarding, or use the official airport shuttle services which have transparent pricing structures.
